Dr Priyadarshi Ranjan is a dynamic and prolific transplant Urologist and is currently the chief of Urology and Kidney transplant unit at Fortis Hospital, Mohali. He is the Founder Director of kidney transplantation program in the same hospital and has been accredited with the inception and establishment of the kidney transplant facilities here. He is currently the youngest postgraduate faculty and director, well versed and specially trained in modern urological and kidney surgeries including Robotic technology and is credited of having established one of the North India’s premier transplant program at Fortis Mohali. He introduced and mastered the technique of Laparoscopic donor nephrectomy in kidney transplantation, which is currently the state of the art specialty of the hospital. He has been credited with performing the first twin cadaver kidney transplants in Punjab, which has marked a new era in the history of cadaver kidney transplantation of the state. His name also features in the well known Limca book of records for performing technically challenging and difficult kidney transplant in the heaviest patient in the country. He has been the pioneering transplant specialist surgeon in the country to start and develop ABO incompatible and swap kidney transplant program after his training at the Johns Hopkins, USA. He is one of the few specialist Urological surgeons across the globe who conducts both donor and recipient surgeries himself single handedly during kidney transplant operations. He has mentored the team which developed the ikidney (incompatible kidney) app, a unique initiative not only in the country but globally to provide solutions to the thousands of kidney failure patients with incompatible living donors, who are not able to receive a kidney transplant due to mismatch.
His educational channel on you tube by the name of Kidney Transplant India, live streams several of his transplant techniques that are widely recognized and are a leading learning source to thousands of transplant professionals globally. His work is regularly featured in the print and electronic media of the region and the country such as The Times of India, The Hindustan Times, The Indian Express, Dainik Bhaskar, The Tribune etc. He is regularly invited as a faculty for conducting kidney and urological workshops and seminars and represents India at global European and American transplant forums. His work has also been extensively covered on local news channels including country's prime national channel Doordarshan on several occasions.
Dr Ranjan's unparalleled meritorious career is highlighted by the fact that after specializing in General surgery, he received super specialized MCh ( Magister-de-chirurgie) training in kidney surgery and further in kidney transplantation, making him one of the highest qualified and trained kidney transplant surgeons in the country. An alumnus of the prestigious King George's Medical College, Lucknow, Dr Ranjan earned his graduate and post graduate degrees with 14 gold and seven silver medals and was the topper of his batch throughout. He was awarded coveted gold medal during his graduation and post graduation for topping the merit in his batch. Subsequently he was selected for the super specialized MCh Urology program at the coveted PGI Chandigarh which helped him earn a faculty position at the Sanjay Gandhi PGI, Lucknow, India. He was invited by the Fortis group to kick start the kidney Transplantation and advanced kidney surgery unit and has been at Fortis hospital Mohali since 2011 after successfully establishing the transplant unit here. Under his mentorship the DNB Urology program was recognized at Fortis Hospital, Mohali to train the super specialty surgeons in Urology and Kidney transplantation.
He received the incompatible kidney transplant fellowship from the world renowned Johns Hopkins Transplant center, Maryland USA. He has trained 12 Indian and 3 international fellows in the discipline of Urology and kidney transplantation till date, and has more than 45 international publications in peer reviewed international journals. He has also authored three books, and has been a coauthor of two books and has written seven chapters in the specialty. He has been an invited faculty at various national and international transplant and urology forums across the country and the globe and has also mentored to refine the transplant techniques of several non-urologist kidney transplant specialists. Since his stay here at Fortis hospital mohali he has single handedly conducted more than 800 Laparoscopic donor nephrectomies and kidney transplantations till date and is one of the few select surgeons in the country to perform kidney transplant in children, with excellent outcomes, having done more than 40 kidney transplants in children overall.
His visionary post transplant management program Transcare has revolutionized the outcome of Kidney Transplant in India and has maximized the life of the transplanted kidney and the patient by aggressive monitoring and follow up protocols of international standards.
